4th of July in Saint Paul 2015

If you're not up North at a lake cabin for the 4th of July, then you'll want to have some fun around St. Paul! We like to celebrate big here, with lots of fireworks and Independence Day spirit, so we've rounded up a list of July 4th events near you!

Annual Fireworks Display
What: Every year on July 4th, the city of Saint Paul hosts a gigantic firework show for all to enjoy. While it is normally at either the Minnesota State Capitol or Harriet Island, this year the event will take place at the newly built CHS Field. It is suggested that you watch from nearby Indian Mounds Regional Park or Lower Landing Park. It may be easier to bike, bus, or ride the light rail to Lowertown for the show.

When: July 4th following the game against the Fargo Moorhead Redhawks, approximately 10:00pm

Where: CHS Field

Cost: Free to watch from outside the field. Tickets are sold out for the game, but season ticket holders will sometimes sell their tickets on saintsbaseball.com. Treasure Island Grass Berm seats will go on sale in person at the box office beginning at 10:00am on July 4th. Standing room only tickets will become available approximately one week before the July 4th game.

A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor
What: Garrison Keillor returns to host a live radio performance of A Prairie Home Companion at Macalester College for the show's 41st anniversary! Special guests include JD McPherson, Joe Newberry, Jearlyn and Jevetta Steele, Butch Thompson, Tjarnblom, and the Macalester College Pipe Band! Rich Dworsky and The Radio Rhubarb Band will be there, along with the Royal Academy of Radio Actors, Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and Fred Newman. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase around the Great Lawn.

When: July 4th, 4:45pm. Lawn opens at 1:00pm, and you are welcome to join the cast as they finish rehearsals. Food and beverages will be available at this time.

Where: Great Lawn at Macalester College

Cost: $35 for adults, $20 for children 12 and under. Purchase tickets here.

*Bring lawn chairs and seating blankets.

Independence Day Celebration at Historic Fort Snelling
What: Experience what it was like celebrating Independence Day in the 1800s. Witness cannon salutes, watch military dress parades, listen to fife and drum music, participate in family-friendly activities, and even watch a mock battle of Colonel Snelling's victory at the Battle of Oak Woods.

When: July 4th, 10:00am - 5:00pm

Where: Historic Fort Snelling

Cost: $11 for adults, $9 for seniors and college students with ID, $9 for active military with ID and their family, $6 for children ages 6-17, and free for children 5 and under as well as MNHS members.

Padelford Riverboats: Fireworks Cruise
What: An evening cruise on the Mississippi that occurs during the fireworks show at CHS Field. You'll have the best seats in the city! Full bar and concessions available on board. This trip sells out quickly!

When: July 4th, 8:30pm - 10:30pm (or whenever the fireworks end)

Where: Departs from Harriet Island

Cost: $25 (+port fee) for adults. $12 for children ages 3-12. Purchase your tickets here ASAP.




Time Capsule for Families: Civil War, 1861
What: While not exactly Independence Day related, this event still celebrates the history of the United States by teaching about the Civil War and one family's experience during it.  Discover why 1861 was an important year for the United States and the Ramsey family in this one-hour children's program.  Use a timeline map to explore the Ramsey House and collect time capsule tokens along the way. Learn about the Civil War and new inventions of the era, help make hardtack in the kitchen, and sample gingerbread cake.

When: July 4th, 12:00pm, 12:30pm, and 1:00pm

Where: The Alexander Ramsey House

Cost: $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and college students, $7 for ages 6-17, and free ages 5 and under and MNHS members.

Outside the City

A Taste of Minnesota
What: A fun-filled weekend event featuring concerts, food, and fireworks. The headliner for the 4th is  Contemporary Christian metal band P.O.D. Ten other acts will also perform throughout the day.  An impressive firework show is scheduled for 10:20pm. Also enjoy a variety of craft beers and local wines! When: July 2nd - 5th. 11:00am - 11:00pm every day excluding Sunday. 11:00am - 8:00pm on Sunday.

Where: Carver County Fairgrounds, Waconia

Cost: Admission is FREE every day from 11:00am - 1:00pm. After, tickets are $10 for adults and children 12 and under are free.
Military, Police, Fire, and EMT receive free admission on July 4th with an ID.

Red, White & Boom: TC Half Marathon and Relay
What: Exactly what it sounds like :) A half marathon (13.1 miles) and a relay (6.5 miles). Pick which one you'd like to participate in celebrate Independence Day with a run!  All participants receive a shirt, pint glass, and finisher medal.  A post-race picnic and lawn games follow the races.

When: July 4th, 6:30am

Where: Father Hennepin Bluffs Park

Cost: $65 for individual half marathon or $130 for the 2 person relay. Online Registration closes June 30th. Register today!
